Greening your Lawncare

by Scott Ankeny

It has become a status symbol, a Zen practice, a hobby, a chore... but all in all it has become a brilliant area for us to find big carbon savings by re-adjusting how we tend our lawns and gardens. Without giving it up all together!

As it sits right now, the EPA states a new gas powered lawnmower being used for just 1 hour is the same as driving 50 miles in car with 20 mpg. This use equals about 2 gallons of gasoline which results in 50 pounds of carbon.

Put that together with the U.S. Census Bureau stating that the average household runs their lawnmowers about 52 hours a year...1 hour a week...totals 2600 pounds of carbon per year per household.

The questions we would ask are

Do you have lawn? Do you mow it? How often? What type of mower do you use?

Are your use and habits in line with the averages? Higher? Lower?

Can you start to mow every other week...? Leaving the grass longer then you are used to but it is far healthier for the lawn and saves you hard cash.

Or, maybe cut the time of use by half? Can you plant more appropriate flora that lives longer with fewer nutrients because it is in its ideal climate??

And to end, we want you to think about how to also cut your water use down.

The Union of Concerned Scientists has put some thought and research to find out that:

90% of all lawns are over-watered.

35% of all household water is used tending to yards.

14% of common water pollution is due to our yard care and much of that is due to chemicals & fertilizers...

If you fall into these categories...don’t sweat it...above all-- do not feel guilty about it. We can solve this over-consumption very easily and if you knew how to before this then you would have done it differently. Much of how we tend our houses ,lawns, cars ,etc are learned from our parents...and they could definitely not see into the future any better then we can today:)

Start by Googling things like companion planting, natural pest care and ideal watering amounts, then read the articles and follow their directions. There are also dozens of great websites that sell good products and give out great tips on how to “green” your lawn care.

We know several very easy ways to save a ton of pollution with less work then you are currently doing and it is right inside of our program...so if you want to be walked through “greening” your lifestyle in a very effective way ....sign up for our service( $29) and get your tailor-made plan.

We will give you links to merchants that will give you deep cash savings for using our service and other links to any resource you might need in the future.

Let us leave you by asking, if nothing else, just start to look for areas you can cut down your energy use. If you are looking for them they will be easy to spot.

I believe in working smarter , not harder.

Nice analysis... although I must say you must have a big lawn to mow for an hour straight (or be a perfectionist!). I wonder what the numbers are for a lawn tractor... Thanks for the Hub!
